Social Skills Group

Some of our students function fairly well in most settings but struggle to make friends or to “fit in”.  Our goal for these students is to teach them appropriate behavior for a variety of settings while still fostering a sense of individual uniqueness and confidence in oneself.  We want these students to be successful in social situations while making friends and enjoying a rich and meaningful life.

Each group is determined based on the comparable skill sets of the individual children.  Our groups typically have a 3:1 ratio of staff to students.   At times, groups will merge for specific skills and may have slightly different staff to student ratios.  Our groups are offered for individuals between the ages of 3 and 15.  Social Skills Group is held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-6pm and Saturdays from 10am-12pm.

We focus on skills such as:

  •     Play and leisure activities
  •     Social interactions
  •     Group learning
  •     Following routines
  •     Community-based interactions

In addition, higher level groups will focus on executive functioning skills such as:

  •     Inferencing
  •     Theory of Mind
  •     Advanced conversation skills
  •     Complex emotions

A FREE intake assessment is required before beginning group. After your child's skills are assessed, he/she will be placed in one of four social groups. The group your child is placed in will determine the day your child will attend.  For more information please call our Center (703-689-0019) or complete our information form and a Program Supervisor will be in touch with you soon!
